Techie Stuff

For a project we hope to get, I have been researching extending WordPress. With WordPress 3 at Release Candidate 1 status, the new features included will be helpful… custom menus, custom post types, etc. So, I found this great tutorial on creating custom write panels over at wefunction.com. This way, WP could be extended to include metadata fields, right in the native interface. Sweet!
Also, there is a series of articles at Far In Space on metabox creation and display.

I’ve recently entered the world of “video chat” – and while I never thought I’d be interested, it’s been really rather nice.
It started with my new iMac (20″, with the built in camera). Then my friend Freda was ready to get a new computer, and decided to go Mac. And my collaborator on the various FAMVIN sites finally worked out a way to get past some firewall issues with his MacBookPro, and we were off to the races… the fourth party is also a Mac person in Denver.
Details: we are using AIM accounts (I think .mac accounts would work as well); My old router had to be replaced with one that would allow the proper ports to be opened (the old one is EOL – and had no clue that this was a possibility!); Freda had to do nothing except remember her AIM password;
Yesterday we had a 3-way “conference” going for a while. And right now I’m on with the friend in NY.
Issues: Sometimes the pictures aren’t very clear – my guess is bandwidth; I need better lighting, because the current setup makes me look like a purple people eater. I have to be sure I’m semi dressed for the day when I answer a call. And, how on earth do we get this to work with the folks on PC’s?

I’ve been fascinated with pixelog.org – such a beautiful, elegant, simple and generally delightful site.
I found this link on scriptygoddess
.
One of the things that drove me to WordPress was the fact that it was
PHP based. It leaves the doors wide open for you to do practically any
kind of hack you could possibly think of.

So – I’m wandering around and came across an article on AListApart – cssdropshadows – and I thought I’d try it out.
I really find this rather fun and interesting… and it works on different sized images without having to create the shadows in Photoshop or Fireworks.

The team behind the international FAMVIN web sites met for an intensive week of work in New York October 4-11
The team presently consists of John Freund, CM, (New York), Claude Lautissier, CM (Paris), Beth Nicol (Auburn, Alabama) and Julio Suescun, CM (Pamplona, Spain).
The primary purpose of the meeting was to develop and more closely align the various lanuage sections of the international site of the Congregation of the Mission. The team also worked on similar development issues for the main FAMVIN site.
Beth Nicol serves as the chief technical resource for John Freund who has the overall responsibility of these sites, Claude Lautisser and Julio Suescun who are responsbile for the French and Spanish language sections respectively.
Besides learning technical skills from Beth Nicol the team also discussed ways of making extensive collections of materials more readily available and also more easily searchable.
These developments will be implemented over the next few weeks and months.

A friend just pointed out this site SwissInfo for information on the battle against malaria. It’s also posted on our Political Action Against Malaria website on the FAMVIN site. These guys will make you itch!

There’s a new blog that floated onto my horizon – www.healyourchurchwebsite.org
I read that title first as meaning a website to heal your church. I was mistaken: this is a blog that addresses healing your church’s website. Quite informative. Much useful information and opinion. So – I’ve added it to my links.
